Calpine’s Board of Directors Commits to Investment in Clean Energy Technologies In 2004, Calpine’s board of directors unanimously supported an investment strategy that commits the company to investing only in low carbon power technologies. Calpine is currently the world’s largest producer of renewable geothermal power and operates the largest, cleanest and most efficient fleet of natural gas-fired power plants in North America. In recognition of this action, Peter Cartwright, Calpine CEO and President, was named Business Leader of the Year within the “Scientific American 50” by Scientific American magazine. According to Editor-in-Chief John Rennie, the “Scientific American 50” recognizes research, industry, and policymaking leaders who are committed to the “enlightened use of technology.” ![]() Calpine's Hog Bayou Power Plant in Mobile, AL Upon learning of the recognition, Cartwright said, “Calpine’s goal is to continue to provide clean, affordable and low carbon electricity. Like a growing number of energy companies, Calpine recognizes that the power sector - as the largest single source of carbon dioxide - must take steps to reduce its total emissions. Calpine prides itself in being a technology leader within our industry, and I am deeply honored to be recognized by Scientific American, one of the world’s leading voices for science and technology.” In further recognition for Calpine’s actions, the New York League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV) named Calpine and Peter Cartwright Clean Air Champions along with New York State Attorney General Elliot Spitzer in May 2004. NYLCV executive director Marcia Bystryn said, “Pete Carwright is not just a visionary leader in the power industry, he is also one of this country’s most important advocates of supporting policies and business practices that will provide New York and the nation cleaner, healthier air.” In 2004, Calpine was named the Most Admired Energy Company by FORTUNE. |
